The only time I've seen the shaky-cam, lens flare or dramatic focus work is when it was used to make something look more like a documentary or news coverage than a movie, where you're supposed to notice that a camera is being used, and even then, using it too often would drive me nuts. Using any of it unnecessarily in a normal film drives me crazy.
