As comic book adaptations go, this one was better than I expected. It is much better than the previous two movies; it focused more on the character development than the special effects.
Could it have been better? Yes, It could have been. But it could have been a LOT worse.
The tropes that drove the superhero comics half a century ago just wouldn't have worked in this day and age. If only because the professor would have been sued for harassment by Lolita. Who then would have appropriated HIS funding for HER research. Recognition of her genius isn't an issue; funding however, is.
The frat boy and the manly-man are still seeking attention and release from depression.
