120 - A Note for 1990 Me

Hey, Brian! It's ME, your Future Self from the far-flung future of 2015! I promised I'd send you a note from the future once I got there, so here it is!

First off, the good news! Every bit of entertainment that was ever recorded from the beginning of time till now - the books, the music, the movies, the TV shows, ALL OF IT - is available for us to experience at the click of a button! Pay attention in Mr. Russell's typing class, you're going to need those skills. EVERYTHING is done via computers. I know, right?

So if I did this correctly, you should be receiving this shortly after that epic comic book convention where you met Rob Liefeld and Todd McFarlane. I won't spoil it for you, but here in the future ONE of those guys doesn't do comics any more and the other makes comics but everybody wishes he'd stop. I'll let you figure out which one is which.

Anywho, remember that special sneak-peek screening of that awesome Captain America movie you just saw?

I know you loved it, but it's crap. It'll never actually make it to theaters, so you made the right choice in buying that bootleg VHS copy of it.

Here in the future, we have made a terrible treaty with the Non-Nerds, a treaty that I am sending you this message through time in order to try and avoid.

Theaters are FULL of movies based on all our favorite things - Avengers, Batman, Star Trek, Star Wars, Mad Max, Lord Of The Rings and the likes - all the stuff we could never understand why the rest of the world didn't love it as much as we did. And now it's taken over! We have full acceptance! At last the Chess Team and the Cheerleaders and the captain of the Football Team can sit together and discuss their favorite moments of the latest Spider-Man film!

But there was a price.

We dumbed it all down :(

We replaced the science and the wonder with explosions and punches. We swapped-out the intellectualism and replaced it with sexual innuendo. We turned Star Trek into Melrose Place In Outer-Space.

Only YOU can undo what has been done! The choice is yours! Would you keep things the same, with your self-imposed social separation and perceived "weirdness"? Or will you go ahead and trade in those things you hold dear for a bit of social acceptance?

The choice is yours.
