Empathy

I read Molly three books tonight for bedtime, then lay there with her and the lights turned out just trying to fall asleep. She started to cry.

I was kind of angry at her because I thought she was just stalling, just trying to force herself to be awake. I gruffly said "Molly. Go. To. Sleep. NOW."

She kept crying and then said between the sobs "Daddy, I *can't* fall asleep".

Every night I wait for her and for Crystal to fall asleep so I can pop in my earbuds and listen to Podcasts or watch some MST3K or just wait for exhaustion to finally overcome me and I can finally fall asleep. Usually takes about 4 hours.

I hugged Molly and said "I know, honey... I know..."

She wrapped her amrs around my head in the way she only does when she's actually frightened of something. "Please, Daddy? Please?"

I knew what she was asking for.

So here we are, in the living room, watching Ducktales, waiting for sleep to come and get us.
