Drag Me To Hell
Tonight's Loss-Of-Focus insomniac Theater Feature presentation was Sam & Ivan Raimi's "Drag Me To Hell". It wasn't very good, but it was AWESOME. And that's hard to do!
First of all, you gotta remember that these two kids are the ones who brought you "Evil Dead", "Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn" and "Army of Darkness". In my mind, they are the INVENTORS of Tongue-in-Cheek Horror. Sarcasm, cheesy effects, humor, physical gags and in-jokes are pretty much expected in every Raimi film these days, right?
So imagine my shock and awe at being presented with a SERIOUS Horror flick that took itself seriously from beginning to end. Not a single "Groovy" or "Well hell-LOOO Mister Fancy-Pants" in the whole film! Just a Gypsy curse, some CGI horror effects, and characters who all took themselves entirely too seriously.
Not a single character line had that "You've GOT to be KIDDING me" tone to it that's oh so common in horror today.
I kept on hoping for a Chainsaw or a smart-ass quip all the way to the oh-so-predictable ending, and I never got one. And that REALLY made me smile :)
They did it! They wrote, produced and directed a REAL horror film! In a day and age where almost every horror flick is either Torture Porn or a Romantic Comedy, they made a REAL Horror movie!
Bravo!
