Geek Camp Recap Part 1: Hannah
Hannah, age 12, gets her own Geek Camp each year. She was the first person to do Geek Camp at the tender age of 8, and we've beeen doing it ever since.
Geek Camp went a bit loosey-goosey this year, letting the mood dictate what geeky activities we did with just a few hard-wired events peppered in. Hannah's Hard-Wired Events were a trip to the Ren Faire down in Bonney Lake, a Weird Al Yankovic concert and a One-On-One Magic: The Gathering session with the best Magic Player I have ever personally known, Steve.
The Ren Faire was awesome, despite us having to cut it short because Molly was miserable in the heat. But we got to see the Jousting Tournament and drunken rabble-rousing Pirates, so that was pretty darned cool :) I had never been to a Ren Faire before that had intersecting STORYLINES going on, s it was a new experience fr me as well!
Hannah's Big Geeky Movie this year was the Sylvester Stalone classic "Demolition Man". I figured that all the swearing and violence would be a hit, and it was! I have never seen her so riveted by a movie before, especially one that is so easy to get lost in the cliche'd script. Sure it's all cliche' to me, but to HER it's all new!
Last year, I taught the girls how to make "Boffers" from PVC pipe, pipe insulation and Duct Tape. This year, Hannah's BIG TEST was to make a Boffer from scratch, with NO HELP from me AT ALL. She passsed with flying colors, making a tight little Katana-style sword with a purple blade. SO PROUD!
On Day One I issued a challenge: The first girl to defeat me 2 out of 3 hands in Magic: The Gathering would get to SHAVE MY HEAD. Hannah came *very close* to beating me several times over the course of the week, much closer than I ever admitted to her. On the final day of Hannah's Geek Camp we were joined by my older niece, Brittany, for the big Professional Magic: The Gathering tutorial. Brittany beat me using a preconstruct deck, and I got out of having my head shaved by letting Britt keep the deck she was using *whew*. After our night with Steve, Hannah got EVEN BETTER at Magic and I seriously feared for the sanctity of my hair!
The saddest part of Hannah's Geek Camp was that we never got around to playing any Dungeons & Dragons :(
All in all, a great success!
