80's Toons on DVD this week 3/14

It's actually a pretty slow week for 80's cartoons on DVD... matter of fact, the only thing being released tomorrow even remotely 80's is "Speed Racer: Collector's Edition Volume 4". Sure it was a 60's cartoon, but it got pretty heavy play in the 80's (at least where I came from). Unfortunately, the only time I ever watched Speed Racer was when some stupid sporting event preempted my usual cartoons for the day. And to this day I *STILL* hate televised Golf and College Football.

Speed Racer I just didn't like. And they tried HARD to get me to like it! Fast cars, a girl who looked kinda like Betty Rubble (the HAWTEST married chick in all cartoondom), and best of all A MONKEY!!! How could you not like that?

Well I didn't like it. Never have, probably never will :(

I actually watched Speed Racer near the end of the 60's beginning of the 70's. At the age I was at, it was one of my favorite shows. Remembering how much I liked watching the neat car and the funny monkey do exciting things when I was a kid, I tried watching it as a grown-up... I can't understand what I liked about it, and it doesn't even seem like the same show I remember! Did they edit it to make it worse after I grew up? Or is it like when kids who liked barney growing up and try watching it again, will they writhe in agony and disbelief that they could have ever liked such a thing? Scary stuff...

I hope beyond hope that I can raise my own kid with an appreciation for the cartoons I loved when growing up, but so far every show I revisit dissapoints me except for the late-80's Superfriends :(

Yeah, I never quite got that one either. Speed Racer and Top Cat I remember being highly ambivalent about as a kid...

Star Blazers I remember enjoying. Plus incidental shortform toons a la Wacky Racers, Hanna-Barbera, Looney Tunes, etc.

Whew, that's been a few years. :)

Star Blazers for us PNW boys was like nothing that anyone else experienced. Talk to anyone outside the greater Seattle area and they have little or no idea of what Star Blazers was. But thanks to channel 11 we got our weekdaily fix of a science-fiction epic that rivaled Star Wars!

Going back and watching it now, though, it's not nearly as epic :(
