Regarding the Comics...

This post is directed at [livejournal.com profile] nani_ka. Feel free to disregard.

So! The big bos of TPB's! Boy, that fella sure did like his Batman! A great sellection of Batman stuff! Batman year one and year two, The Dark Knight Returns, Arkham Asylum, the best parts od the Rahs Al Guhl storylines... great reading! That's the good news.

The main problem with this collection is that it seems he or someone very close to him may have been a pretty heavy smoker. That combined with the long-term storage conditions have left all these books with a kinda funky smell that will make them worth a bit less.

There are a few semi-good finds in there, but nothing to write home about. A full run of The Cult wirth about $7 a pop ($28 total) to the right person... a fairly rare copy of Dave McKean's "Cages" number one which would have been worth $30 had it been in better condition...

As for the remainder, you could probably get 1/2 the cover price for 20% of these books and maybe a buck each for the rest of them.

My advice, since there is no emotional or financial expenditure in getting rid of these books? Ebay. A series of 99-cent-opening-bid auctions all at once with shipping incentive for bidders to bid on multiple items.

Now my sales pitch!

I happen to have an Ebay account (seller id "hulkalicious") with excellent feedback and a pre-made audience who are the type of people who would be looking for this type of stuff. I will list all the TPB's with an opening bid of 99-cents and handle the collecting of payment and shipping and everything. In exchange I would like 50% of the final price (which would be just about enough to cover Ebay fees and PayPal fees) and the right to keep any of the books that don't sell.

That's my professional opinion and my sales pitch! And to your friend it's free money AND getting rid of the box with little or no effort!

Whatever she decides, I'm still looking forward to appraising the other box once it gets found :)

I suggest laying the comics out to get some air for a day or two and then add a few dryer sheets put between the comics in the box. This will help the smell some. Febreze also works wonders if lightly sprayed. Empty the box and hose it down with Febreze while the books are airing out too. It probably soaked up a lot of the whiff and that will help keep it from coming back.

OH do I have tales of Febreze for YOU!

So I had stumbled accross a VERY NICE stack of older Fantastic Four comics (we're talking low numbers around issue 25-80, right when Stan and Jack were in the full of their prime) but they had belonged to a heavy smoker and therefore had a scent that SCREAMED "Welcome to Marlboro Country". Had a buyer who was interested, but wanted to cut the price in half due to the smell involved. I told him to give me a week and I'd see what could be done about the smell.

We tried a variety of sollutions culled from common sense and old wives tales, and in the end I had a stack of ruined comics suitale for scrapbooking :(

Fabreez took *some* of the smell away, but caused the cover and pages to become super-brittle.

Arm & Hammer Baking Soda worked EXCELLENT, but left a fine powdery residue on everything that was quite unpleasant.

And the oldest, tried-and-true of sollutions, spreading them out in the open air with plenty of fresh air and sunshine? Aparently even the slightest of summer breezes can carry a comic book up to half a block away.

I will consult with both friend #1 & friend #2.... friend #2 (the one doing the storing) was actually hoping friend #1 would forget she had them, & is interested in buying some of them. (i'll ask her which ones she wanted & get back to you.) I'll also show friend #1 (the actual owner) this post & see what he says...
