Righteousness Mode: Disengage

Don't get me wrong... I'm not calling for the abolition or criminalization of alcohol or anything like that. People drinking booze is one of our greatest freedoms! To me, it just makes no sense whatsoever.

I'm also in favor of legalizing Marijuana, even though I myself would never smoke the stuff for many of the same reasons I wouldn't drink (to a much lesser degree, of course).

I'm Pro-Choice and think that Women should be allowed to do whatever they like with their own bodies and their own lives, even though I myself am appalled and horrified by the thought of Abortion.

But it's not really about *me*, is it? it's about YOU. YOU have to live with the decisions that you make, not me. That's why I believe in Education rather than Legislation. Instead of telling them THAT'S BAD AND YOU'LL BE PUNISHED IF YOU DO IT, why not explain to them WHY it's bad and let them decide for themselves?

Booze, Pot and Abortion... all things I've researched and thought about thoroughly. All things I don't want to do, all things I don't understand why anybody WOULD do them, but all things that I think people should make up their own minds about.

I am 100% with you on this one. Freedom of choice is vitally important, and I loathe the concept of what I call "For Your Own Good Laws" -- if you don't think people should do something that affects only themselves, then educate them on why and then let them make their own choice, don't legislate it.

Of course, there are some laws that seem like they're just "For Your Own Good", but aren't. Take seat belt laws--such legislation demands that folks where seat belts, since not wearing one can place a burden on many others (everyone who has to take care of, and pay for, decades an accident victim would spend as a vegetable.)

Oops.
Let me try that again.
Aha! Now I realise that we are on the same page (well, on this part of the topic).

This is exactly how I feel, particularly about education and prevention over legislation and punishment. That drives me up the wall. There HAS to be a better way, and believe me, I have my ideas.

I thought getting stoned and drunk before your abortion was as American as apple pie?

Now THAT would be a busy weekend.

Sound reasoning in a brief form. THANK YOU!
