Considering the cartoons that Hanna/Barbera are famous for, the simplified revelation makes a certain amount of sense. They were prolific, and amusing, but their characters, with the possible exceptions of Tom and Jerry, weren't that sophisticated in my opinion. Fred Flintstone, Captain Caveman, and Scooby Doo are funny, but there isn't much thought required to enjoy them.
I looked up Fred Quimby in Wikipedia. Between 1940 and 1954, 15 cartoons that Quimby produced, were nominated for Oscars. Eight of them won. Oddly enough, Hanna Barbera did most them.
The timing of the release is interesting. Fred Quimby retired in 1955. According to Wikipedia, Hanna/Barbera took over his job at the MGM cartoon studios. Maybe 'Goodwill to Men' was their attempt to show the MGM execs that they could be serious about the business. Two years later, MGM closed the cartoon studio.
