It sounds a lot like a traditional Disneyland Last Day Prank. There's a long standing tradition of trying to become immortal through doing something crazy on your last day, such as the Jungle Cruise Guide who jumped off his boat and in to the water with a plastic knife to wrestle the animatronic hippo :) Another guy, in charge of moving a skiff in to place for Fantasmic, got up and danced with all the characters while in his underwear. A driver of the raft to Tom Sawyer's Island, usually a 3-minute trip at the most, took an entire raft full of guests "hostage" and drove them all the way around the island!
This guy probably thought he'd make a big mystery noise that couldn't really harm anybody, then let himself get "fired" on his last day.
