Been bugging me...

Ya know how when, in an American TV show or movie, when the main characters meet up with someone Asian, the sceene that the Asian person is in will end with a Chinese gong sound. BWWWOOOONNNNGGGGGGG!!! It's like the producers got together and said "Sure there's the slanted eyes, dark hair, short stature, broken english, and the fact that this character's only line is a fortune-cookie riddle... but how is the audience going to know this guy is from Asia? Ahh, I know! We'll put in a Chinese gong sound! THAT should do it!"

Of course, some times they also have to add in that plinking "dunt-da-dunt-da-dunt, da-da-dunt-dunt-daaaa" music, too.

Anyway, I've been thinking about that all week long, and about how much that bugs me. Thing is, the Asian person doesn't even have to be stereotypically Asian! Could be a movie about an Asian version of Indiana Jones fighting off an alien invasion, it doesn't matter. If the hero picks up a pair of chopsticks or a fan, you get the "BWWWWOOOONNNNGGGG" as he looks on, puzzled. WHY?!?!?!

Antonio Bandaras doesn't get "La Cucaracha" when he enters. Pierce Brosnan doesn't get "God Save The Queen" when he enters. Arnold Schwartzeneger doesn't get "The Beer Barrel Polka" when he enters. WHY MUST JACKIE CHAN GET A BWONNNGGG???
