I have an autograph book that is a pretty exclusive book; it only has signatures of comic book professionals that *mean* something to me. It's not easy to get your signature in that book. I've been working on it since 1989, there's only 32 pages in it, and I've still got room for plenty of signatures. From small-time self-publishers to comics pro superstars, you only get in here if you've done something that makes me happy and proud to be a comics fan.

Today, page 19 Died :(

Dwayne McDuffie was an extremely rare type of writer. If you've ever seen the Justile League Unlimited cartoon, or the Static Shock cartoon, you've seen some of his work. I've been struggling to find the perfect words for this, to describe why he was any better of a writer than any of the umpteen bazillion writery-type folks out there, and it's..

Every time I met him at conventions over the years, he was one of those rare writers who seemed to "get it" because he WAS it. There was a feeling that if he were to suddenly gain super powers, he'd drop right in to the costumed crime fighting with ease. His personality came through in every hero he wrote so that that battle between Superman and Darkseid wasn't just good versus evil or hero versus villain, it was Dwayne McDuffie debating his own nature and reaffirming his beliefs. It's him telling his darker impulses that no, he IS better than that and he will NEVER give in to that line of thinking. After reading a Dwayne McDuffie comic book, I find myself wanting to be a better person.

And that's why he's in my book, and that's why I'm sad he's gone. I want more people like that in the world :(
