Day 9: Super-Slueth
Jan. 9th, 2012 08:18 pmStill sick, but something happened today that has made me go all Nancy Drew over The Internets.
His name is Eddie Harris, and he's been announced as a guest for this year's Emerald City Comic Con.
According to the write-up on the ECCC website, Mr. Harris was "One of the primary animators for Scooby Doo in the various 70s incarnations of the series, his work also included The Flintstones, Tom and Jerry and The Jetsons. He not only animated for, but also helped to design, the popular Speed Buggy, and worked on Inch-High Private Eye, Wait Til Your Father Gets Home and Grape Ape. He won an Oscar for 1973's theatrical animated film Charlotte's Web. ECCC will be his first ever convention appearance anywhere".
My first thought was "OMG HOW COOL!!!" but then I thought "Wait a minute... I know a lot of useless 1970's and 1980's animation trivia, that name doesn't sound familiar..." followed by "I didn't know Charlotte's Web won an Oscar?"
And so I jumped in to The Googlemobile and started researching! No mention anywhere on the internet of an animator named Harris. No mention of Charlotte's Web getting an Oscar for ANYTHING. Watched the end credits of every incarnation of Scooby Doo from 1969 to 1986, pausing every screen to see if I could find anyone with the last name of Harris; no luck. Speed Buggy, Grape Ape, Inch-High Private-eye, Wait Till Your Father gets Home - NOTHING.
At this point I'm at an impasse. I *could* go ahead and make the accusations of a fraudulent guest public, or I could go and gather more info. I have requests out to Mark Evanier and Scott Shaw, two of the people who worked at HB in the 70's and so would probably know, waiting for a reply from them.
Found *one reference* to him, frm 2009, he donated some artwork to a Special Olympics auction, they mention that he worked with some HB artists but was really more about artwork for the automotive industry.
I HOPE he's for real. I don't want to be The Guy Who Accused A Nice Old Man Of Lying :(
