Are you a parent who wants to share the fun of role-playing games with your kids, but you’re worried that the rules are too complicated or a standard adventure would tax their attention spans? Are you teacher or librarian who wants to introduce your class to RPGs, but you’re concerned about how to make them PG without taking away everything that makes them fun? There are a great many reasons to share your love of RPGs with kids. Kids naturally engage in this kind of imaginative play, and as any gamer can attest, RPGs develop an array of essential educational skills besides.
Having a family RPG night--or an RPG birthday party!--can be one of the most rewarding and memorable family events. Come and learn some tips and techniques for running RPGs for kids, pick up a copy of Monster Slayers: Heroes of Hesiod (a D&D adventure for kids available for download on Wizards of the Coast’s website), and share your share stories and experiences. Hosted by the author of A Practical Guide to Dragon Magic and the creator of Monster Slayers: Heroes of Hesiod, Susan J. Morris.

Alternate schedule for ECCC for if I want to maximize my swag. This is the panel schedule that is maximized for potential prizes and/or give-away items. I'll go ahead and rate each one on a scale of 1-5 for how likely you are to walk away with some sweet free crap (1 being pretty unlikely, 5 being a sure thing).

FRIDAY

Falling Skies Screening and Q&A
Room: 4C1-2
Time: 3:00 - 4:00

SWAG RATING: 2/5

I'm not entirely sure why this got it's own panel at ECCC, as far as I can tell none of the folks involved with this show are guests this year? Maybe a surprise drop-in visit from Noah Wyle? I'll be the premiere of some new clips for Season 2 (which premieres in June), and these types of events are the perfect place to pick-up special promotional posters, stickers, buttons, T-Shirts... the type of stuff that fans don't find out bout till *after* the event and then spend big bucks on Ebay to get it after the fact. Not a *LOCK*, but plenty of potential...

DC All Access
Room: 4C1-2
Time: 4:00 - 5:00

SWAG RATING: 2/5

DC Comics has a lot invested in making fans think they love the new DC Universe, and they have never shied away from giving out free stuff. Drop by their table at any time to pick up armloads of free comics, posters, buttons and all sorts of awesome free crap... but sometimes they'll hold back some of the awesomer free stuff for their Big Show. A few years ago, the only place to get the full set of "I Am Batman" buttons was at the DC panel.

Seattle Superstorm: A Syfy Channel World Premiere
Room: 4C3-4
Time: 4:00 - 5:30

SWAG RATING: 2/5

The Sci-Fi Channel loves to treat these things with a little bit of class, occasionally making up movie posters tht are exclusively available at their premiere. And hey! It's a Sci-Fi Original Movie set in SEATTLE! Sounds kind of awesome!

The Great Geek Off - A Family Feud Game
Room: 2AB
Time: 4:00 - 5:00

SWAG RATING: 4/5

It's a Game Show! A Nerd Game Show! Based on "Family Feud"! If you have the guts to get on stage and try to answer questions, you'll get some prizes! If you just go and watch you ALSO have a chance to win stuff via Audience Participation! If you go there and just sit quietly, you won't win anything...

Drawing Inspiration: The Art of the Whedonverse
Room: 4C1-2
Time: 5:00 - 6:00

SWAG RATING: 2/5

Dark Horse Comics *love* to give stuff away, and since this is a panel all about some of their nicest artwork? I can imagine that they just might hand out special Whedonverse-centric posters but I can't guarantee anything...

The Art of Guerilla Toy Making
Room: 201
Time: 5:00 - 6:00

SWAG RATING: 1/5

This sounds like the type of panel where *one lucky attendee* will walk away with a sample item, like maybe a Concept Figure or a really nice statue... usually given away to somebody who asks some really awesome questions.

Marvel: Breaking Into Comics
Room: 4C1-2
Time: 6:00 - 7:00

SWAG RATING: 1/5

Marvel hasn't been known for giving away *any* promotional materials at conventions since at least the 1990's, but now that they're owned by Disney? Hmmmmm...

Robert Kirkman Q&A
Room: 4C1-2
Time: 7:00 - 8:00

SWAG RATING: 3/5

Most of the "Spotlight" or "Q&A" panels have the potential for give-aways, but Robert Kirkman is a guy who is thoroughly invested in making his fans *happy*. He started out as an indie publisher and is now HUGE and knows the value of promoting his products.

The Not So Late Late Show with Oni Press
Room: 2AB
Time: 7:00 - 8:00

SWAG RATING: 1/5

I put this on here because it's the first time they're trying this, and they have the creator of Scott Pilgrim listed as their guest (nd he's NOT listed as a guest of the convention)! Potential for free stuff, but not much...

Adult Origami
Room: 201
Time: 7:00 - 8:00

SWAG RATING: 5/5

At the very least you'll come away from this panel knowng how to fold a piece of paper in to a Penis :)

As i was going through all the schedules and everything for ECCC, I just noticed that Eddie Harris (the guy who claimed to have been a lead Hannah-Barbera Animator that won an Oscar for the non-Oscar-winning 1970's animated film "Charlotte's Web") has had to cancel his appearance at Emerald City Comic Con this year.

I have extremely mixed feelings about this.

If I assume he was telling the truth and only misremembering past events (as a gentleman of his age could do), I feel terrible that I've essentially "Bullied" a nice old man away from a potential fan following that would love to hear his stories of working at HB during the tumultuous final days of trying to keep their animation here in the US.

If I assume he was telling a lie, trying to pull some sort of scam, then I feel like a HERO who has saved Emerald City Comic Con from some potentially embarrassing PR nightmares that could have ruined their reputation.

I'm pretty sure I'll never find out the truth, and I'm pretty sure I don't want to know the truth.

HOLY SMOKES have you checked out http://www.dreamwidth.org recently? It's Livejournal circa 2006! I think I'm in love!

All y'all feel free to add me over there, I'm still captain_slinky and I think I'll be slowly moving all my stuff over there, starting with my regular journal and then rebooting some of my various communities over there as well if it seems to work for me :)

Who am I?

Every time I start a new blog at a new blogging site, I like to try and take a snapshot of who I am *right now* for posterity. The guy who had a Geocities Diary website in the late 90's is a very different guy than the fellow who had an LJ account, who was entirely different than that blank profile over at Friendster, and he doesn't even have the same interests at that dapper chap on Linkedin, and that guy who created a Facebook account is unique, and he's nothing like that guy who never tweets any more at Twitter, and NONE of them even KNOW that guy with the Spindoctors video on his MySpace page.

But they're all me, just at different points in my life.

So who am *I*?

I'm not sure... let's see where this blog takes me, and then you can tell me?
