I was thinking about Zombies yesterday, good old-fashioned George Romero Zombies to be exact, and it hit me square in the thinkbox of the ABSOLUTE SAFEST PLACE in a Zombie Outbreak! All the clues are there in the original Trilogy! Keep reading if you want to live!

-Once you're dead, your intelligence and memories are reduced by about 90%. In Day Of The Dead we see examples of a very intelligent Zombie named "Bub" who was supposedly a soldier of some sort who remembers how to use a gun, appreciates music and even remembers to salute a superior officer.

-Zombies have a simple set of instructions for living: Do what you remember enjoying doing in your living years, only stop doing that thing when the presence of fresh flesh is too overwhelming and you just have to eat. Bonus points if the thing you used to do or go to is full of fresh flesh, such as the shopping mall in Dawn Of The Dead (where the theory that Zombies just keep trying to do what brought them joy in life, in this case a comment on consumerism because all these zombies wanted to go to the mall).

-The "Do what you remember doing" rule of Zombies is most likely dictated by whatever the zombie was doing or thinking when they died. The example is again in Dawn Of The Dead where the pilot, who has been turned in to a zombie while trying to get to their secret safety hidey hole, continues to try and get in to the secret safety hidey hole area of the mall. Most zombies you see will have been thinking "I am in trouble and need to get help", "I need to get away from here before things go horribly wrong" or (in good old Human nievity) "I'm fine, I should just ignore it and go do something I like to take my mind off of it".

Keeping this information in mind, most of the traditional "Safe Places" people usually talk about would probably be under siege 24/7! Hospitals full of Zombies who remember "I'm sick, I need to get to the hospital". Fire stations, police stations, jails, Military Bases, etc, all seen as places you go to for help so they're out. Large stores such as Walmart or Costco, while being very defensible, have the same problem as The Mall - everyone remembers that they should go shopping because they love a bargain. Even rural locations are a bad choice because there will be a significant portion of the zombie populace that think "I need to get out of town before this all gets too out of control".

I hope you're with me so far, because here comes the absolute *brilliant* part! You wanna know where you need to go?

THE LIBRARY.

Think about it... it's a three-part answer.

The only zombies that come to the Library are going to have been more smart and intelligent than anyone who would panic and need to seek out help, panic and flee or panic and go into denial over the whole thing. These are the zombies that thought "I need to get to the library" they either feel safe there, feel happy there and/or feel that they can find some answers there on their own. Even at a 90% intelligence, they're still smarter and more reasonable than the average American Idol voter. They're the zombies most likely to be reasoned with. controlled and even tamed.

More and more often, Libraries are funded by the liberals and hippies in any given community and, thusly, are more likely to be "Green" with solar panels and natural heating/cooling. Around here, most of them even have a nice little garden patch! If you must stay in one place instead of staying mobile, the Library provides a great amount of amenities that would be desirable in the event of a non-catastrophic apocalypse.

And finally, they types of Zombies that *would* flock to the library that you're unable to reason with would most likely be less-than-intimidating and very easy to "Deal With" by bashing in their skulls.

Really, it's the perfect place!

You know what they say... "Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. TEACH a man to fish, split your potential market share in half and weaken the economy through oversaturation of your product thus forcing both yourself AND the man to go begging for fish which then inspires a Governmental mandate of establishing a Welfare State wherein fishermen are subsidized by tax money because the Fishing Industry is 'Too Big To Fail'".

MORAL: Just give the man his damn fish.
