044 - Geek Vs. Nerd
Feb. 13th, 2015 11:54 amI spend a lot of internal monologue trying to further define the difference between a "Nerd" and a "Geek", and I think it comes down to how common you think your obsessions are. If you like to impress people with obscure facts about your thing, you're a Geek; if you assume that EVERYONE knows as much about your thing as you do and may even take a bit of pleasure at shaming somebody for their lack of this "basic" knowledge, you're a Nerd.
Knowing that Disneyland opened on July 17th 1955 is Geeky. Making fun of your friends when they can't figure out why you're wearing Mickey Mouse Ears to work on July 17th because, duh, it's Disneyland's Birthday EVERYBODY knows that? That's Nerdy.
Having a vanity license plate that says "HANSOLO" is Geeky. Mocking your friends because they don't know the name of Samuel L. Jackson's character in the Star Wars universe let alone the significance of his purple lightsaber, is Nerdy.
Wearing a Football jersey to work in order to show support for The Home Team is Geeky. Being astounded when a co-worker doesn't know the name of the Quarterback on the opposing team for the upcoming game and why this is such a good.bad thing, is Nerdy.
