White Noise

I just had the most intensely WEIRD thing happen to me... I'm still shaking as I type this.
Ever heard of EVP? Electronic Voice Phenomena?
They made a movie a few years back about it, starring Michael Keaton. In a nutshell, EVP is all about people who hear voices in the random static of electrical recording devices and sound conveyance.
You know the background "hiss" on a tape, or the little crackling and popping in the background while you're ont he phone? "White Noise"? That's what we're talking about. People have recorded nothing but blank sound and heard voices in the void. The creepiest one I've ever heard was a recording from a graveyard. No one there except for the crew recording sounds, but when they played it back you could hear a little boy whispering "Am... am I *dead*?" No little boy was actually there, but for some reason the playback has a little boy whispering in the silence.

Anywho, I tell you THAT so I can tell you THIS; I just experienced a VERY STRONG EVP right here in the Comcast Call Center!
And even though I joke alot in this Journal with stuff that should be taken more seriously, please beleive me when I tell you that I am 100% SERIOUS about this.
The customer thought he had hung up, but I was still on speaker phone. I took advantage of this and was going to "Ride" the call out waiting for the customer to relize I was still there and hang up, a sort of way to cheat the phone system in to letting you take a little break.
In the background I could hear the guy's TV set crystal-clear; he was watching "Groundhog Day". But then I thought I heard something weird.
As I listened closer, I recognized it as three or four different voices whispering in unison. It had an other-worldly feel to it and it made me feel very cold. As soon as I could composer myself and verified that it WAS actual voices and not just my immagination or someone else in the room talking, I started taking notes. Here's word for word what I heard:
It repeated a few of these more than once and in different orders, and with different voices of the group being the "main" voice talking while the others were just there for support. And with each line of dialogue I got further and further freaked out. I finally had to hang up.

Date: 2006-08-04 10:32 am (UTC)Of course, real voices never talk to me, but then anything supernatural, otherworldly or extra terrestrial always seems to follow me around, but hide just out of my eyesight. I have had people swear they saw ghosts or heard voices when I was staying over, but I never hear a thing. Once I stayed a week in a KOA campground, the entire week everyone saw tons of UFO's all week long, they started when I got there and stopped when I left. I tried staying up late one night to see them, and everyone was all, "well usually they show up long before this, I guess they aren't coming." Then the next morning the entire campground was like, "Dude! Just after you went to bed it was amazing! I have never seen anything like it! It was intense! The whole sky lit up and there were a ton of them! You shoulda been there!" Except, I know that if I was there it wouldn't have happened. I have had psychics try and read my aura or whatever, and all my friends would say they knew all kinds of stuff and it was so amazing how accurate they were, not just general stuff either but extremely specific. Then they try and read me and they are like, "Uhm.. you like cars don't you?", "No", "Wait, I see horses, you are an intense horse lover!" "What?!? Are you kidding?" "Uhm... I think I see the woman you are with is very much in love with you and I can see wedding bells in your future!" "I hope not, that's my sister..." "Look, that's all I got, sorry... No refunds." I actually considered one time, hiring myself out to be a ghostbuster or something. Your house completely haunted and you can't sleep at night? Murderous foul beings chasing you at every turn? E.T.'s keep kidnapping you and trying to experiment on you? Just hang out with me for a week and I guarantee, absolutely nothing will happen! It will be the most boring week of your life! and when I left, things would probably follow me so they could hide from me too...
If you really hang around me though, you will swear I was incredibly psychic. All that stuff seemingly works really well for me. I'll tell you a secret though, mostly I am not saying the future or doing anything special, I just say what I think or want to happen. I think then people seem to make it happen for me. It's very odd. Oh, and ouija boards? I hate them. Not because they don't do anything for me. Quite the opposite. It drives me crazy, but they won't work at all, they won't answer a single person's question, not until 'I' think of the answer. They spell out everything I think. I had people tell me that a ouija board could never say the name of God, so I had one quoting scripture, everyone seemed to freak out more over that than if it would have said they would all be murdered in their sleep... uhm... in college I used this to my benefit... some people are really gullible and will actually do things the board tells them too... You might think that maybe I was pushing the window thing to say what I wanted, except that I wouldn't need to touch it except for the tip of a fingernail and it would still do it. Those things suck. So, the supernatural, e.t.'s, all that stuff, sounds very interesting and all, but it feels to me more like a joke that everyone is in on, and the joke is on me. Oh wait, the only thing that ~has~ actually worked for me? Prayer. That works really well! So yeah, I believe in God.

Date: 2006-08-04 12:14 pm (UTC)I also remember in high school that a friend of mine had figured out there were very quiet voices from other lines bleeding through his line and he found a way to talk to them, like some kind of secret party line. It was strange, but just a by-product of some kind of technological bleed-through.

Date: 2006-09-29 07:33 am (UTC)1st: For many months I heard voices and music deep inside the white noise of the gas, forced air heater in our house. Finally one of us said something to the other and we were amazed to discover that we were BOTH hearing it. We hadn't said anything to each other because, well, because back then (80s) nobody had heard of EVP or whatever it's called and, well, it just sounded like a nutty thing. We finally recognized that we were hearing a radio station... voices and classical music. Even after we confessed to one another we could both still hear it.
Then, a few years later we were talking on the phone to one another and I thought she had music on at her house and she thought I had music on at my house. Eventually it was loud enough for me to ask her to turn it down so we could talk better (a long distance call). Of course, neither one of us was playing music. Turned out to be her phone because as she moved the reception of the radio station got louder or softer and when she switched to her other phone it went away. We got a good laugh over it.
If the voices start telling you to do things, quit using the phone.
