Geeky and Political
Sep. 22nd, 2008 12:42 pmMy own personal belief; let's see if this gets circulated at all. I think it's fair and balanced even though The Republicans are compared to The Evil Empire.
The Liberal Democrats version of Government is Star Trek/The Federation; The Conservative Republicans version is Star Wars/The Empire.
The Dems are in a clean and shiney optimistic universe where there is apparently no poverty or hunger. As long as you're a member of The Federation, The Federation will take care of you! Replicators and holodecks for everyone, making sure that your every need and desire is filled. And when they DO hit a pocket of resistance or some bad guys (Klingons, Romulans, Ferengi, Borg) who DON'T want to be a part of that they are confused and dumbstruck without an idea of how to deal with it. it takes a lot of ingenuity and luck to avoid getting blown up!
The Reps live in a dirtier, more realistic universe. Dessert planets full of slaves and untrustable aliens are around every corner. They're under constant attack by Rebel Forces (mostly pirates, terrorists and dissenting members of The Empire). The only way to succeed in their universe is through lies and manipulation, trying to change the system from the inside yet getting corrupted by it yourself and, of course, putting a lot of faith in ancient all-powerful religions.
Then there's The Green Party, which is like, I dunno... Plan 9 From Outer-Space?

Personally, I think that The Federation probably got that way by employing a lot of nearly communist taxation policies and romoval of personal freedoms in order to achieve the whole "Needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one" thing they're so proud of. The Star Trek universe (and the Federation) are all about redistribution of wealth and supression of "Unpopular" rights (such as the right of Khan to rule the Universe with an iron fist, the right of The Klingons to kill whatever they want, the rights of the Ferengi to make a profit regardless of how many lives may be lost, etc).
On the flip-side, The Empire is all about letting folks enjoy their personal freedoms, even if that personal freedom includes forming a rebel alliance. They KNOW the evil that lurks in the hearts of man (and alien), they KNOW about corruption. It's not something that's exclusive to them... in their universe, EVERYBODY is out for their own best interests and they know it and will do anything to try and manipulate the situation to their best interests. But The Liberal Media of that universe is bent on portraying the Empire as being "Evil", when all they're doing is trying to do what's best for them and their way of life. The Liberal Media in that universe has even gone so far as to portray The Rebel Alliance as HEROES for gosh sakes, when all they are is a bunch of pirates and terrorists! In the Star Wars Universe, the Empire has to fight agains their own enemies AND their public persona.
I mean really... vilification of The Religious Right... vilification of The Sith... same difference!

Date: 2008-09-23 12:58 pm (UTC)The entire part about how the one senator convinces them that he should be Emperor just seems like such a real possibility to me. But the "elected" Queen (huh?) in her ornate attire and cushy lifestyle. Sure it was a how Queen would be, but that's the point - she doesn't at all seem like a reflection of the people she supposedly represents. An elected official should relate to someone in the voting population, maybe a rich minority, but I don't remember seeing decadence in other people's lives other those in power in SW.
Here, you can be rich and choose to not be involved if you want; but in SW, they have some how accumulated all the wealth and the politicians live off it.
I don't think Vader wants the Rebellion to exist no less thrive. He wants the dark side of the force to be greater than the other side of the force. It's a sort of false choice, like any cult or slimy salesman, talks you into making your decision even if it goes against your better judgment; it's all about manipulating in a way that makes it seem like people made those choices for themselves when they were really forced under duress (oh, say blowing up a planet or two) or simply brainwashed.
