Friday night was a SUCCESS! Kinda! We didn't get in to the Planned Adventure Proper, but we did have a little mini-adventure that allowed all of us to kind of get in to the flow of combat. And despite a few grievous errors on my part as a DM that may have resulted in the untimely demise of the party (NO ONE SURVIVED), I now know what I did wrong and was able to make corrections that allowed me to successfully run another mini-adventure the next night for one of my nieces and my darling [livejournal.com profile] khristle.

So the things we all need to take away from that gaming session?
  • KNOW THY CHARACTER. Know who thios character is, where they come from, what they can do and why/how they would do it. Know how and when to use all your daily, encounter and at-will powers. Know your weapons and your armor.
  • MAKE SURE THAT THE DM KNOWS THY CHARACTER. I need to remember to take your character sheet from you before the game and make notes. Also, I need to ask you any questions that I have about your character up-front instead of waiting till it comes up in combat and we have to pause the game so we can all discuss it for 20 minutes.
  • GET MORE DICE. I really, really need to invest in some more dice, or locate the rest of my dice here in the house.
  • STICK TO ONE SOURCE. The information on the D&D Minis Cards can sometimes be WILDLY different than the information found in the Players Hand Book and/or Monster Manual. The cards made things nice and convenient, but they just don't have all the necessary information for a full-fledged game.
  • REMEMBER GAME MECHANICS. One major and two minors. Healing Surge. Bloodied. Combat Advantage. These are things I NEED to think of and remember at all times.

Other than that, I loved the game and thank you all so much for having come! Also, thank you for not mentioning just how disgustingly filthy our kitchen was; I just didn't have time to clean it :(

People in the village had always known about "The Fortress of Failure" located just a few miles out of town. Legend was that a wealthy Warlord had chosen a location for his Summer Cottage Stronghold atop the smallish jutting peak known by the locals as "Needle Peak". Extremely steep sides of this peak made scaling it impossible until the wealthy Warlord paid a construction crew to build a series of narrow ramps and stairs leading up. He then had them cut off the top of the peak to form a nice sturdy floor on which his mini-fortress could be built, overlooking the lay of the land for miles around. Unfortunately, he didn't confer with any Dwarven contractors and therefor didn't know till it was too late that this particular peak was far to weak to support any type of building. The construction crew gave-up after the fourth foundation started crumbling beneath their feet. And so all that is left now is a leveled-off mountain top with a beautifully carved floor, 5 doors that lead to the only safe paths up or down, a bit of crumbling debris where unfinished walls used to be, and about three-and-a-half fortresses worth of beautiful rubble and debris at the base of the mountain.

Recently, word had spread around the village that a large Barbarian from the North had found a baby Green Dragon and had taken it to The Fortress of Failure where he was caring for it as if it were a pet. The townsfolk are terrified because a dragon, even a very young one, can cause quite a bit of damage. There have been rumblings about how "Somebody should do something" and "We should put a bounty on that stupid Barbarian's head", but no official action had been taken yet.

It may have been the mutton, it may have been the grog... but for whatever reason, 4 different adventurers who didn't even know each other all got the same idea in their heads at the same time. "I'll go up there! I'll kill that stupid Dragon! And these villagers will make me their LEADER! Or at the very least buy me some more Grog!"

Completely unaware of each other, the four adventurers set out to The Fortress of Failure at Needle Peak. By chance, each one took a different set of stairs up the mountain and reached the top within moments of each other. As they all stood there thinking "Wait, what?" a gust of wind blew all the doors shut at once, alerting the Barbarian to their presence.

The Halfling, quick as his kind are known to be, was the first to act. He quickly realized that The Young Dragon was asleep on the edge of one of the treacherous pits that marred the once beautiful floor. "If I can just get a lucky shot on that dragon right about *there*..." he thought to himself "...It should knock the wee green beastie right in to the pit!" He took out his loaded sling, took aim and let loose a stone headed right for the Dragon's head... and watched as the stone sailed right past, sailing off the edge of the mountain in to the valley below.

The Dragon remained asleep.

The Guardian Barbarian rushed at the Halfling with his Greatsword drawn, took one mighty swing and made contact! If not for the dexterity of the Halfling, we would have had a situation much worse than just the ruined shirt and shallow belly-cut that he came away with.

The dragon remained asleep.

On the other end of the room, a female warlock stood at one door and a male warlock at another. Both assessed the situation and called upon their dark powers to try and vanquish the foe. The Male Warlock did some real fancy hand motions and impressive lights swirled around him, but other than that nothing much happened. The Female did some movements as well and summoned forth a wave of darkness that enshrouded the Dragon, causing the dragon to cough and sputter a bit.

The Dragon remained asleep.

At the last door stood a Simple Fighter of not much intelligence who had taken part in WAY too many rounds of "Take A Drink Every Time The Bar Wench Says Something Sexually Suggestive". He had drank so much, he at one point even thought he was an Artificer! Seeing the dragon directly in front of him, he charged forward with his longsword at the ready and swung mightily! The flat of his blade hit the dragon right across the nose, causing him to sputter and sneeze a bit.

The Dragon remained asleep.

The Simple Fighter tried to shake the snot off his sword and took another swing, this time missing entirely but then noting the Barbarian and Halfling fightng just a few feet away. "Well if the stupid Dragon doesn't want to fight, maybe I can fight THAT guy!" and bounded off to help the Halfling.

The Dragon woke up!

The Barbarian, now distracted by the Simple Fighter, attempted to position himself for battling two foes at once. In doing so, the Halfling saw his opportunity! A deftly-placed dagger in the back combined with just enough shove made the Barbarian lose his balance and go tumbling down the mountain through one of the opening in the floor.

Victorious against their foe, the Halfling and the Simple Fighter smiled at each other ready to take on the next challenge. Unfortunately, that next challenge was The Dragon who was now hovering a few feet above them, spraying them with a blast of his poison breath which killed them both instantly. They staggered in to The Pit and their last words may have been "I Regret Nothing" and/or "I wish I could quit you".

All that were left were the Warlocks at this point. The male Warlock made more motions and pretty lights that seemed to not only hurt the Dragon, but also confuse him. It was as if the Dragon couldn't even see the male Warlock! The female Warlock continued her motions as well, making the dragon sicker and sicker with each motion. So the Dragon bit her head off. The end.

But the Dragon was still feeling effects from somewhere. Every once in a while he would be able to focus again and remember that there was another foe in the room. There he was, by the door! In a rare moment of clarity, the Dragon lashed out and bit the Warlock with a venomous bite before forgetting that the warlock was even there.

A few moment after that, the Dragon remembered that The Warlock was there when a bloodied warlock corpse fell to the cold stone ground behind him.

The Dragon enjoyed a snack of leftover Warlock and Barbarian before going back to sleep.

THE END.
