COMICS THAT GOT ME IN TO LOVING COMIC BOOKS: Person with powers stops a bank robbery, aliens observe the whole thing, decide to test The Hero to see if invading The Earth is a viable plan, they learn that they are no match for The Hero.

COMICS TODAY: In part 17 of a massive multi-title crossover event that will change this comic book universe FOREVER, The Hero finally gets revenge on The Villain who killed one of The Hero's loved ones as part of a much larger plot that involves a full-scale INVASION OF REALITY, and the fate of the universe lies in the balance.

THE POINT: I miss small comic book stories.

I miss only having ONE title per team. And maybe 5 or 6 team members at a time. Nowadays there it seams like there a multiple team titles and 10 or 20 team members at a time. I love XMen and Avengers, and have been reading them for decades. But even I have a hard time keeping track of who is who and where they are, where they are supposed to be, and what they are supposed to be doing.

Yup, that's "Small" comics in a nutshell :) X-Men used to be as intimate as a group of roommates, now it's as complex as an inner city high school. I can remember how awesome and mind-blowing it was to see all 7 members of The Justice League in one center-spread shot together, and now if you wanted a picture of the whole team you'd have to use a satellite!

I like some crossover events, but I think they should be relatively uncommon. I don't like it when an event is shoehorned into a comic line when it doesn't add anything to the story. I don't mind references and fallout because those happen within a shared universe, but not every event usually has to affect nearly every comic line.

So far, I'm liking what I've read of the latest Secret Wars event, even though I was convinced I wouldn't. It looks like it's actually simplifying the universe, which is nice.

I got into comics at a weird time. I think the X-Men had two books going, and there were various X-teams, but basically you could pick and choose which books/teams you wanted to follow and you were good.

Until summer when Marvel would lose their friggin' minds and have CROSSOVER EVENT OF THE YEAR and all the stuff you'd been reading about would abruptly stop, get tossed aside, and you'd be thrown into some crossover you didn't ask for and your team had no business being involved in to begin with for three months. If you were really lucky, they'd go back to whatever story they were in the middle of and finish it off, but more likely it was somehow shoehorned into the crossover or just ignored for eons.

I had to stop because those three months would bleed into a fourth month and then a sixth and then finally you had to read everything and everyone and I couldn't afford it.

I miss the smaller stories, too.
