I'm a HUGE fan of horror films. Not "Torture Porn" or "Grossout Cinema", but real, honest-to-gosh HORROR FLICKS. All the classics and not-so-classics of the 70's and 80's, all the genre-defining moments of the silver screen, the brilliance of the 1960's Hammer Films... LOVE THEM.

My daughter, however, has always been a bit of a wuss and so I haven't really been able to flex that particular bit of brain-muscle except for the rare occasions when I have a few hours to myself so I can try and catch up with the past 90 years of scary movies.

But recently... Molly has been showing signs of interest. She likes "creepy" videos on YouTube. She adores the Spirit Halloween Store. I *think* she's ready to take a few steps into horror, as long as their the "fun" kind.

As backwards as it may seem, I'm thinking of starting off with Army Of Darkness, then let her go backwards in that franchise if she likes it.

Trying to come up with some other films she might enjoy which aren't just teenage sex films with a killer in them (I'm lookin' at YOU, Friday The 13th)... what else?

I really need my Nieces to ring in on this one, as they all made the transition to Horror Flicks independent of my tutelage...

Army of Darkness is pretty good. Also, you might try 'Ringu'; it's pretty creepy. The American version is pretty good, but I seem to recall a few 'adult' moments that you might not be comfortable with her watching. But it has been a while since I watched it.

Another horror venue you might try are the Goosebumps books. I've actually found them as a whole to be creepier than a lot of the mainstream horror aimed at the grown up crowd. I would avoid the movie with Jack Black. He is usually a GREAT comedic actor. This was the exception to the rule.

I'm having a hard time coming up with good options. I can think of lots of movies that I loved, but I wouldn't share them with your daughter for a few more years. And others, like Gremlins, are campy and dated. The Babadook is really, really good, and I can't think of any sexual content. It's about a single mother and her young son who find a book. A bad book. The Babadook. It's well done on so many levels. I wouldn't call it fun, though.

What about Carrie? It's been a long, long time since I've seen it, and I do seem to recall it hinting at oral sex at one point, and there's a bit of nudity with girls in a locker room, but I think it might be okay overall.

Firestarter? IT? Stranger Things? Poltergeist? Amityville Horror? Invasion of the Body Snatchers? House on Haunted Hill?

You reminded me of a few I had forgotten. Invasion of the Body Snatchers always struck me as more sci-fi than horror, but it might work. Poltergeist and Amityville (the original) would also be pretty good.

I don't know about Carrie or Firestarter. The pigs blood might be a bit gross. And in Firestarter, Charlie's dad gets killed. It would depend on how the family feels about those kinds of things.

How about some of the Vincent Price horror movies? Some scenes were barely suggestive, but they had good horror elements to them. Plus, it's a good way to introduce Edgar Allan Poe's works.
