SCTV FINALLY COMING TO DVD!!!
According to TVShowsOnDVD.com...
-Music clearance was a big delay: Eugene Levy says that "Every tune that we used over eight years had to be re-tossed a lot of money just for clearance, to re-license these things"
-The DVD release will not be a "complete first-season" package, Levy said. "SCTV" began as a series of half-hour shows but eventually moved to a 90-minute format when the program began airing on NBC. The DVD collection starts with those 90-minute shows...Levy said the decision was made to start the DVD collection with the 90-minute shows because it's always smart to "start with your strongest stuff."
-DVD producers are in the process of putting together bonus content for the "SCTV" set, and Levy is ready to play a part in the extras. "They're doing that stuff now and finding whatever footage that they can muster, off-camera stuff or anything else," he said. "There will be commentary. They're trying to organize that."

Date: 2003-08-10 05:32 pm (UTC)It's like a parody of every TV show of the 70's and 80's (because that is when it was done), starring tons of people from before they were famous (like John Candy, Martin Short, and the dad from American Pie).
SCTV
Date: 2003-08-11 10:53 am (UTC)Well, being from Buffalo, and being able to see Canadian TV, I was there from the start. For those not in the know:
Second City is a comedy troupe out of Chicago, and back in the early 80's decided they wanted their own show. They pitched it to NBC, who said no, then went to CBC in Toronto, where several members were from, and sold it there. Second City television, or SCTV, started off with short 30 minute episodes, but when it became wildly popular it went to 90 minutes. Before SCTV, many of Second Cities alumni went to Saturday Night Live, and made films. Some of the alumni include:
Bill Murray
Brian Doyle-Murray
Joe Flaherty
Harold Ramis
John Belushi
John Candy
Catherine O'Hara
Andrea Martin
Dave Thomas
Martin Short
Dan Aykroyd
Eugene Levy
Gilda Radner
George Wendt
Shelly Long
Jim Belushi
Tim Kazurinsky
Mary Gross
Dan Castellaneta
Mike Myers
Chris Farley
Tim Meadows
Stephen Colbert
and many, many more.
The format of the show was that SCTV was a network, and had many different shows. Some of my favorites were:
Monster Chiller Horror Theatre with Count Floyd
Farm Film Celebrity Blowup
The Fishin' Musician
The Bobby Bittman show
and of course, Kanadian Korner, better know as The Great White North. TGWN was created because the CBC required that any shows on their network required at least 5% "Canadian content". The players decided that to fulfill that Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis would sit around for a few minutes, wearing toques, drinking beer and eating back bacon. This was a playful but sarcastic slap at the network, but it became the most famous segement on the show.
After it got very popular, NBC approached them to finally come over to their network. After a few years, I imagine keeping up that level of brilliance had to be hard to maintain, so it eventually went off the air, but I still believe it was one of the greatest comedy shows ever to be shown. Second City must have some kind of magic to be able to produce comic actors of that caliber for decades.
Re: SCTV
Date: 2003-08-11 11:10 am (UTC)I'm in agreeance with your list of favorites ("Strange Brew" is one of my all-time favorite flicks), but would also add the earlier adventures of Ed Grimley (before he became the SCTV equivelant of The Church Lady, overused) and... uhm... crap! I can't quite remember the name, i think it was "Happy Hour", a kids show that was hosted by a happy drunk and his sock-puppet pal live from a local bar. OOH! And the Schmenge Brothers! Cabbage Rolls & Coffee, Mm Mm GOOD!
Can hardly wait for this set to come out!

And together, we are...
The Happy Wanderers!
It's all starting to flood back
Date: 2003-08-12 09:27 am (UTC)"Hey kids, what time is it?"
"It's Mambo Time!"
And the commercials were as good as the shows:
Now, available together for the first time, all the hits of "5 Neat Guys" with their smash hit "She Does It".
