Mar. 21st, 2004 05:08 pmHad my choice of movies to see today before work, but only two that I *really* wanted to see: Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Soul (which in hot competition for the honor of being The Most Cumbersome Movie Title Ever, right along with "The Man Who Went Up A Hill But Came Down A Mountain" and "Master And Commander: The Far Side Of The World"), or Dawn Of The Dead.
I chose Dawn of The Dead because I loves me some zombie action :)
Not a direct remake! The only similarities were (1) Zombies eat the living, (2) survivors whole-up in a mal, and (3) there's a big black intimidating cop.
The BIG differences are (1) Zombies are more like Evil Dead-type insane berzerker cannibals than the old-fashioned staggering type, (2) the only way you can become a Zombie is if you get bit by one (dying in any other way ensures a peaceful eternity) and (3) Everybody dies in the end. EVERYBODY! That just left me feeling kinda sick and bothered while walking out of the theater.
See, in th *original* there was the promise of "The Island". If they could just make their way to "The Island", everything would be okay. And we never discovered if they made ti there or not. We were just left to make up that ending on our own. But not THIS verion... NO! In *this* version, they make it to the island and *THEN* get devoured by Zombies!
AAAAARGH!!!

Date: 2004-03-21 11:41 pm (UTC)Actually, technically you didn't see what happened to all the people on the Island.
Ving Rhames had some sort of option to do the sequel if this movie did well (which I believe it is) so uh, there's at least him surviving. I'm not sure if Sarah Polley had the same contract clause. (The James = no talk but that of zombies for the last two weeks, and I'm still hearing the "hmmm.. this would be a crappy place in a zombie attack" everywhere we go!!)

Date: 2004-03-24 11:08 pm (UTC)Was the movie good(Dawn of the Dead)? I want to see it too. I actually want to see both of those movies you listed as well...
Okay, don't know you, but here goes - Dawn of the Dead scared the begeebee's out of me when I was eight. So..I'm hoping not to have flashbacks in the theater this time around.
Scary? Or cool adult scary? Let me know, please.

Date: 2004-03-25 12:06 pm (UTC)OKay, the *short* answer is that it's Adult Scary, and incredibly god/well done. Real people, real characters, no character acts in a way that makes you go "Shyeah, right... no one could/would ever do that!"
There *is* some extreme gore. Thanks to years f The Media desnsitizing me to it, the only things that now really get to me are the quesions that it raises inside me; could I do that if I had to? If i were put in the same position, how would I react?
Staying tot he very end and watching all the credits makes it an even MORE horrifc film.
I hope this helps
