Obligatory "Superman Returns" post
Jul. 3rd, 2006 08:47 pmFINALLY got to see Superman Returns today; I was seriously beginning to believe that I would not get to see it in a theater! But we saw it in the grandest way we could; we saw it at the Imax theater (so there was a good 20 minutes of 3-D stuff in there to boot)!
This post will be completely spoiler-free, so feel free to read on. My SPOILER post for discussion will be posted later.
So! The movie made me cry no less than 4 times, and get full-on "Quiver Lip" another half-dozen. But this was all because I'm a big pansy.
I cried during the opening credits, folks. Not just once, but THREE TIMES. Bottom lip was trembling during those opening notes played on the french horn, eyes gettign damp through the "Bummbadda bump pum pum" parts, then FULL ON CROCODILE TEARS when the classic 70's-style credits started rolling and the full-on "BAAAAH Badda-ba ba, BAAH baah bah..." kicked in. Third time was when I saw the "Superman created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster". Cripes, just thinking about it NOW is getting me all misty :(
And my fear that Brandon Routh couldn't pull-off the "In my arms you are safe" look of Christopher Reeve's Superman? I had no reason to worry. Seeing him on screen I just knew that we'd be safe in his manly grasp (AM NOT GAY!!! SHUTUP!!!).
And of course I cried during the end credit's, 'cuz the reprise the Superman March then. And I cried at several spots within the movie where appropriate.
Best part about seeing this movie today was that I got to see it with a GROUP of people who know I am the biggest nerd that they know;
khristle and Molly (Molly's very first Super Hero movie!), plus my brother Butch and his wife (Heidi) and their daughters (Haley and Hannah, ages 11 and 8 respectively). And they ALL loved the movie! Even my Brother Butch, who usually HATES these kinds of movies! But of course I was most concerned that The Girls would like it, and they did. It was "Awesome" according to Haley, and Hannah siad she liked it a lot but she had to hide her eyes every once in a while during the scary parts.
So my opinion? POSSIBLY THE BEST SUPER-HERO MOVIE EVER MADE!!! And my reasoning behind that ruling? They stuck by the source material, they incorporated the past movies, they stayed true to the character of Superman and yet they made a movie that appeals to people who have never seen a movie or read a book about him in their entire lives.
Of course I'll have to review the other comic book films in my library before passing final judgement, but as it stands right now Superman Returns is in the top spot. Go see it if you haven't already!
