Today local radio station 97.3 KBSG (K-Best for Good Times and GrrrrrrEAT oldies) was counting down the top 100 Rock-N-Roll "Oldies" of all time. They do this several times a year, and it's got me wondering about The Rules.

First of all, we need to recognize the various categorizations and eras of Rock-N-Roll so we know what songs and performers are eligible:
  • 1950's-1960's = "Oldies"
  • 1960's-1970's = "Classic Rock"
  • 1970's-1980's = "New Wave"
  • 1980's-1990's = "Heavy Metal"
  • 1990's-2000's = "Grunge"
  • 2000-Present = "Crap"

They've done a good job of clearly stating the genre and era that this countdown will include; no Nirvana or Smashing Pumpkins in THIS countdown, no sir! Not even a Jimmi Hendrix or Janis Joplin tune! Just straight-up good times and great oldies! There is a very definitive amount of songs that qualify for this countdown. It's not as if new oldies are being written every year, right? So if that's the case, then WHY do they need to continually re-countdown the top 100 Rock-N-Roll Oldies of All Time?

Has new information come to the attention of the judges that will disqualify "Jailhouse Rock" from the running?

Is Gerry of Gerry & The Pacemakers sitting by the radio every holiday season going "C'monnnnn Ferry Cross The Mersey! This is our year!"?

Do The Raiders quake in fear when Paul Revere goes on his drunken "How can they bury Louie Louie at number 27 like that" tirade?

Does Del Shannon call up the radio station during each broadcast and scream "RUNNAWAY AT NUMBER 12??? ARE YOU SH*TTING ME?!?! How does 'Wake Up Little Suzie' come in at number 10 but 'Runnaway' gets sh*itcanned at number 12? I DEMAND A F*CKING RECOUNT, GAWD DAMMIT!!!"

Is there really that much controversy in the world of Rock-N-Roll Oldies Countdowns that we need to re-do them every few months?
