I love that announcer-guy's voice! "Staaaaaaar Trek"! "Data, an Aaaaaaaaaaandroid"!

Much like The Moon landing, Kennedy's Assassination and 9/11, most people of *my* generation can recall exactly where they were on the day that Star Trek: The next Generation premiered. For me, it was a special occasion; I made my parents drive me in to town so I could watch it at Grandma's house. She had CABLE TELEVISION, and one of those great big console TV sets that was not just a TV but also a damned handsome piece of furniture. Grandma ("Hoohoo" as i called her) was the favorite of the two grannies because (a) she always fed me and (b) she let me have complete control of the TV. She had endured and nurtured my love of "Star Truck" through my childhood, and she was more than happy to pop me some popcorn and let me watch the new Star Truck while she and my parents played cards in the kitchen.

I remember my first impressions vividly. "That guy is old and bald". "Where's Spock?" "A KLINGON?!?!? On a FEDERATION VESSEL?!?!?" And, in the end "Well that certainly was good, but it certainly doesn't live up to the original".

It took the entire first season to win me over. When Tasha Yar died, THAT was the moment that they completely won me over. And it was a good thing, too, because had i *not* grown to love it, I never would have had a common point of interest to share with Todd (one of my longest of long-time friends)!

I always love to tell the story about Todd's reaction to that premiere episode of ST:TNG... and I never know if it's what actually happened, or if I've embellished the story over the years to make it sound better. But the way i tell it, Todd was enjoying the episode all the way till Work made his first appearance. Todd then stood up and turned off the TV, declaring that there would NEVER be a damned dirty Klingon on the bridge of HIS Enterprise.

I love that story :)

Is THIS GUY the next Kirk?!?!?

Rumor says that yes, Mike Vogel (seen here a few years ago from the movie "Posieden") is gonna be Kirk in the new Trek flick.

Discuss.
