Jonathan Winters, DEAD!
Apr. 12th, 2013 05:25 pmI'm feeling kind of shaky after hearing that Jonathan Winters died. I have several people whom I idolize, but Jonathan Winters was my *Role Model*. He's who I want to be when I grow up; rarely a star but always one of the best parts of whatever he was involved with.
I'm sad that there isn't a single roll of his that I can really point to as a universal Point Of Reference for everybody who doesn't know him by name. No stand-out roll that will make (younger) people say "Oh, THAT guy! Damn he was funny!"
As a child of the 70's/80's, I was introduced to him via shows like Mork & Mindy, but that's not gonna do it. It's like trying to explain who Shelly Berman is, only harder because Jonathan's comedy recordings don't even BEGIN to capture who he was.
You know that moment in conversation when you make the most perfect joke? Not a pop-culture reference, not a snide comment, but a genuinely funny joke that fits in to the conversation and makes everybody laugh? THAT'S Jonathan Winters.
I'm gonna miss having him in this world :(
