Repurpose!
May. 7th, 2013 08:03 amSo there's this article about how old DVD's could be used as cheap labs for HIV testing in third world countries that is shaming me this morning in two different ways.
WAY THE FIRST: I openly mock "Physical Media" all the time despite still owning several DVD's and VHS tapes of hard-to-find stuff that I haven't converted yet. Whenever DVD's come up in conversation, I talk about how quaint they are like hand-dipped candles and butter churning at Colonial Williamsburg. I'm really quite a jerk about it, and I take the joke too far - ESPECIALLY considering that I like to sell DVD's at conventions, and DVD is the most convenient way to make physical trades in the realm of HTF Video! I should b EMBRACING the DVD rather than mocking it!
WAY THE SECOND: My idea of recycling/repurposing stuff (as with most Geeks) is to get a hot glue gun and turn it in to a toy or a decoration or a steam-punk something. Up till now, the best use for old DVD's that I had seen was to use it as the backing face for a clock. Now THESE GUYS come along and they're all "Yeah, you could make a clock out of it... OR YOU COULD SAVE LIVES WITH IT!"
I guess it's only a matter of days before somebody makes a funny hat from an old rotary phone and an 8-Track tape of Boxcar Willie's Greatest Hits, then somebody says "Yeah that's great... but look if you just turn it upside-down? It's a cure for CANCER!"
