Super Friends
Dec. 9th, 2013 08:51 amWhile dealing with the decline and eventual death of my Dad, my Nerd-Side couldn't help but notice similarities between the roles that my siblings and I play in this family and the roles of the heroes in the Justice League (or "The Super Friends" for you folks who only know super heroes from TV).
SUPERMAN - My big brother, Ed "Butch" Miller. At a moments notice, he could always be counted on to sly in and save the day with his super-human powers. When the sewer backed up on Thanksgiving, he crawled under the house to fix it. When my parents needed a new TV, he showed up with a giant screen television. We needed more sleeping space, he showed up with a giant trailer. He has a friendly, reassuring presence about him that just makes people know that he's here to save the day.
WONDER WOMAN - My sister, Jan. An ambassador from a strange Master Race (Amazons / The Californian Branch Of Our Family) who is every bit as strong and dependable as Superman, yet rarely gets the credit she deserves. She brings a sense of closeness and levity to any situation, but is also the first to volunteer for the toughest of jobs. She was the one who sat with Dad overnight in the hospital night after night, letting him attack her over and over again in his dementia. No matter what he dished out, she could take it.
BLACK CANARY - My sister, Beth. A fierce fighter who is primarily known for fighting the good fight all on her own, but comes to discover a natural born leader when faced with adversity. For a super hero that doesn't really have any super powers, she can (and does) take FAR MORE punishment than anyone could have ever expected. Superman and Wonder Woman may be the flashy big-name heroes that everyone remembers, but it's Black Canary who keeps the team together.
BATMAN AND ROBIN - That's me and Crystal. No real super powers, but an incredible array of gadgets and other technology that make us invaluable to the team. Plus, we're WAY cooler and more popular than the rest of them combined.
