Even though I really hope that Reality TV would just go ahead and die already, I have a brilliant idea for a Reality Television Game Show - "Persuit Of Happiness".
Each week, two families are chosen. The first part of the show is dedicated to introducing the families to the viewing audience, showing an average day in their life (ala "Wife Swap", "Super Nanny", "Clean House" and the likes). In the second portion, we introduce our Financial Dream Teams - two pairs of Accountants and Financial Advisors, who will be treated like ROCK STARS or KARDASHIANS through the rest of the show. Each team will consult their respective families with a breakdown of exactly what they could do to get their debt under control, AND what they should do if they ever won $10,000; which bills to pay off first, which debt should be drawn out, what to invest in, maybe even address a few financially irresponsible habits that need to be nipped.
Ten grand isn't life-changing money, but it *is* life-stabilizing - IF it's spent correctly.
The third portion of the show would be interviews with the family members after they have met with their Financial Dream Team. Why do they think they should get the prize money? What do they plan to do with it if they win? What did they think of the advice given to them? Do they think they can live like that? Emotional plea bargaining with the viewing audience.
Final portion of the show, the Financial Dream Teams convene and give their own opinions of the families they just consulted. Show ends with an American Idol-esque call-in voting option for the home viewers to decide which family gets the $10,000 prize this week.
And the losing family, they at least got some incredible advice from professionals about how to get out from under their crushing debt.
