captain_slinkySomeone on my friends list posed this situation, and I think it makes more sense than anything else.
I think we (the collective "We" as in "Life on Earth") are just God trying to figure out what HIS purpose is.
According to most religions, in the beginning there was God. Just God, nothing else. No supervisor, no training manual, nothing. "Well let's see here..." God said, "It seems that I'm omnipitant. That's pretty cool, but what am I supposed to do with it?"
And so in finding out the boundaries of his power, he created The Earth and The Heavens and the yada-yadda "Let There Be Light" stuff. Then he got bored.
"Hey, I know! I'll take that little green earth-thing I made and I'll make gazillions of ME to go around on it. Me by myself, I'm just one God... but a couple billion people made in my image, each one slightly different yet basically the same? I'm sure at least ONE OF THEM might stumble upon what it is I'm supposed to be doing! But it might get awfully crowded down there, so I'll make each one of them have a time limit of, oh, somewhere around 100 years I guess (give or take)".
So God's been trying to figure it out for a LONG time here. So when a person dies young, it's just God's way of sayin "Noooo, that's not it..."
The Ten Commandments? "Uhm... Moses? I'm not sure what we're really SUPPOSED to be doing, but I've go this list of like 10 things or so that I'm pretty sure AREN'T what we're supposed to be doing. It's got some pretty basic stuff here... it's not killing, it's not stealing... oh, and the No Other Gods Before Me one? Yeah, well, that's just because I'm *me*, and I know I'm the only one. So don't let any of them waste time on that road, okay? So yeah, if you could get that Memo out to the rest of the people I'd really appreciae it. Thanks!"
Hell? "Oh c'mon... you KNEW that wasn't what we were looking for! What were you thinking???"
Reincarnation? "Hey, you might have been on to something there... you wanna give it another try?"
And so, when we have terrible Hurricanes, Typhoons and Tropical Storms.. well, that's just God's eraser.
