I, too, was one of those folks who stood on line in '77 (I was 12 at the time) to get in to see Star Wars. After Empire (any chance Kasdan can write Episode III?), my expectations were so high for every film, special, series, etc., that was in any way Star Wars related.
Needless to say, I've been disappointed far more than I've been satisfied. I mean, I even hated Mark Hamill's appearance on "The Muppet Show."
Expectations aside, I thought Phantom Menace was just an awful film that catered to small children. My son thought it was brilliant, of course (he was 7 when it came out). He loves the wacky characters and the simple plot. (Hmmm guess Lucas is a bit like the tobacco companies -- start 'em young before they know any better.)
Clones worked a little better for me -- that is, once you get rid of that silly Anakin/Padme stuff, which "Willow George" (heh heh, I like that) didn't pull off very well at all.
Hope you don't mind me adding you -- dotgirl said I had to or else her ninjas would find me and make me watch Howard the Duck again
