It's all about THE GOUT!
Aug. 8th, 2006 08:38 pmWent to The Doctor today, he told me that my foot hurts so bad because I have The Gout.
My DAD used to get The Gout all the time when I was growing up, but that was becuase he liked to eat the gross parts of various farm animals (The liver, the gizzards, the lungs, etc...) so I'm not sure how *I* got it.
So The Doc prescribed some pills for me and I'm trying the old-skool "Home Remedy" of eating plenty of cherries, see if that works. But in the mean time I just have to hobble myself around and be in pain alot.

Date: 2006-08-09 04:47 am (UTC)Purines are the stuff in the gross bits. Spinach has pretty high levels of the stuff also. Supposedly avoiding these will help, but with freak - who really doesn't eat much gross parts nevermind spinach - it really doesn't. An attack seems to have more to do with how much he's been sweating & how little water he's been drinking. Full Strength gatorade & similar drinks only seem to make things worse for some wierd reason, although if I water it WAAAAY down for him it helps. Almost like (for him) its a liver/kidney issue keeping the uric acid from getting screened out & flushed properly.
Another "home remedy" that works (as gross as it sounds) is raw potato.
Western medicine? Colchicine works well for freak when he's having an attack, and Allopurinol is what he's supposed to be taking on a daily basis. Although we had to start doing the "raw potato & lots of water" trick when his medical coverage went away. Fortunately there's usually a long bit inbetween attacks, and the potato seems to help, so...

Date: 2006-08-09 05:55 am (UTC)Cherries are a good remedy as are pretty much any berries and it looks like diet soda is the devil just like my urologist lectures me. Drink water, water and more water, and when you can't stand any more water lemonade.

Date: 2006-08-09 06:19 am (UTC)I was wondering if kidney stones & gout have some of the same base causes... hadn't gotten curious enough to try & get freak to do a Kidney Cleanse yet though. Someday.

Date: 2006-08-09 06:45 am (UTC)I had another round of kidney stones a couple weeks ago and one of the thing I have to get rid of is the multi-vitamin I got a few months ago because it has the "wrong" kind of calcium.
