What I did
Nov. 29th, 2007 10:13 amTo remedy all my computer woes (which included lots of errors from Outlook Express, Winamp, IE and of course the "Missing" Firefox) I just went ahead and used the Recovery Disks from Compaq to format my HDD and start from scratch. It's like a brand-spankin-new PC! I had forgotten how much Spyware and "Helpful Shopping Assistants" they had pre-installed! I had been reading my FL here on LJ when an ad for Compaq internet Services of some sort slowly began to creep across my screen. "Helpfully Provided by Compaq Connections"! Went in to the add/remove programs and ended up gutting nearly a GB of such programs!
Oh, and Microsoft keeps asking me if I want to restart my computer NOW so it can update. I say "No thanks, I'll do it later", then 4 minutes later it pops-up "Hey, uhm, it's Later now... you wanna restart? 'Cuz we could totally restart right now".
Bought a $100 computer from a guy with a Poodle-Mullet who had a non-descript van FULL of the things. Very obviously "acquired" from a business that was upgrading, it's a lay-down-under-the-monitor type of computer (as opposed to a tower) with a "Workstation 7-A" sticker on the front of it. He claims that they came from a local Triple-A. He told me that if Windows asks to update i need to say "No" or Microsoft will charge me $100 because that's what Microsoft does, maaaaaaan. Came with Monitor, Keyboard, NASCAR Mouse and a printer... so why not? It's plenty powerful for my Mom (who is getting it for Xmas from my Dad) and has TEN TIMES a smuch storage space as the one she is currently using. Granted, her current PC has a 4GB drive BUT THAT'S NOT THE POINT!!! I think she's gonna love it :)
