So here's how it went down. Amy Sherman-Palladino had just been "Let Go" from Gilmore Girls, ( the show she created) and some executive at FOX said "Hey Amy! Come make a show for us! I'm sure you've got plenty of great ideas in that wonderful head of yours, right?"

Amy replied "I dunno... I guess. I've got this sort-of idea in my head, i was gonna use it for a Sub-Plot 'B' Storyline in an 8th season of Gilmore Girls, but that wouldn't really be enough to make a whole-"

"WE'LL TAKE IT!"

***THREE YEARS LATER***

"Wow, Amy, thi sis a great script! It's quirky! It's full of fast, witty dialog! It's another perfect hour-long 'Dramedy' from the fertile mind of Amy Sherman-Palladino!"

"Well I'm glad you liked it! I was kind of worried that-"

"Yeah, we just have a few *minor* changes we'd like to make... who did you see in the main roll?"

"I uh...I was thinking it would be great for Lauren Graham. And she's available now so-"

"Hmmmmmm, really? See, now *we* were thinking more along the lines of, say... Parker Posey? And we're in luck because we happen to be contractually obligated to give her a starring role this season! So! Parker Posey it is!"

"Oh! Uhm, okay... I guess she could-"

"And we're cutting it down from an hour to a half-hour. People don't want to sit for an ENTIRE HOUR any more, you know."

"Well I suppose..."

"...Aaaaaaaaand we're kinda gonna need to put in A LOT of laugh track. Because sure, *we* catch all the jokes, but America NEEDS to be told when they see something funny! If we don't help them, they'll never learn!"
