Our chosen form of punishment for when Molly misbehaves is The Corner. Just as every parenting book and on-line parent with an opinion has suggested, one minute per year of age.
I was against this up till just recently, because she was still too young to really understand why she was being punished and/or make the connection between bad behavior and the punishment. "The cat did not have a fork in his butt; I provided a solution to this lack of anal forkedness. And now we are playing the Stand-In-The-Corner Game! Cool!"
But now she knows when she has done something bad and will actually help me decide if she should be punished. Actual quote that has been repeated by her many times in the past month-or-so after she has done something she knows is wrong? "Corner? THERE it is!", almost in a taunting way as if to say "Whatcha gonna do, old man? Gonna put me in the corner? Your corner doesn't scare me... I've been there, maaaaaaan! I *LIVE* for The Corner! BRING IT!!!"
While in the corner, she forces herself to cry in a fake way in order to force herself in to real tears. It's like she knows that The Corner was meant to be a punishment and she should NOT have a good time there.
And when her two minutes are up, she turns around and looks up at me with big, red, sad eyes and waits for me to pick her up and explain to her why she was in the corner, and re-state what rule of the house she broke, and give her a hug.
And when she crawls down out of my arms and is ready to move on, she blows a kiss to The Corner and cheerfully says "Thanks, corner!" I KID YOU NOT! She actually appreciates the lessons that she learns from The Corner!
