Sad realization

captain_slinkyBeen having issues with my external HD for MONTHS now, always assumed it was n issue with the drive and not my computer.
But here I am with the drive hooked-up to![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
khristle's computer and I'm having absolutely NO PROBLEMS with the drive.
Happy because now I can recover/use all 500GB of storaed information, sad because it means my 'puter has ISSUES. Issues that I have no idea how to resolve :(
See, it's one of the Compaq computers with the built-in multi card reader in the front. Ability to read 7 different types of removable media cards, plus three USB2.0 slots right on the front of the computer below the CD an DVD drives. Each one of these slots designates itself as a lettered drive regardless of if there's removable media in it or not. The Compact Flash slot is "G", the SD slot is "H", the Memory Stick slot "I", etc. Two of he three USB slots on the front desginate themselves as "K" and "L" whenever a thumb drive or ther removale media is plugged-in... usually.
The very first time I connected The Big External Drive, I plugged it in to the USB slot designated as "K". Ever since then, regardlessof which USB slot I plug it in to (front or back) the dive calls itself the "K" Drive.
This works about 60% of the time without a problem. The other 40% of the time it confuses the bajeebers out of my poor computer and causes all sorts of freezing and errors that can usually e resolved by either unplugging the drive for a few seconds and/or switching to a different USB port.
Since rebooting the drive fixes the issue slightly more than half of the time, I figured it had to be the drive that's going bad, right? But NO. Over here on Crystal's computer it's all hunky-dorey and calling itself "G" as it should be based upon the port that it's plugged in to.
