[livejournal.com profile] thecookielady just met her new neighbor... he's a Level 3 Sex Offender. She even provided A LINK to the site where you can read all about him! He's a Child Rapist. Level 3 is the "Yeah, he's probably gonna do it again but we have no choice but to give him a chance on the outside" level of Sex Offender. That really, REALLY sucks for Todd & Andrea :(

I then made the mistake of searching for Sex Offenders in my own neighborhood :(

FOUR SEX OFFENDERS WITHIN A 2-MILE RADIUS!!! Two of them are Level Two ("He's probably not gonna do anything but I dunno he's got them crazy eyes so watch out") and two of the Level Threes. One of the "Threes" is a Child Molester.

Beyond the initial shock of it all, I'm not actually THAT concerned. Just a bit more... aware, I guess.

But ya know what really gets my goat? I mean, sure, he's a guy with a terrible past and having him in your neighborhood has just made your home go down in value by about a bazillion percent and you'll never feel safe in your neighborhood again despite "The System" having declared that he is perfectly fit and ready for life in a suburban neighborhood and he has to live SOMEWHERE and there's always going to be somebody who feels threatened no matter where he lives and no matter how reformed he may be... I get that.

No, what really irks me is HOW DOES A CHILD RAPIST AFFORD TO OWN A HOME?!?! I personally have 100% LESS CHILD-RAPES ON MY RECORD and I can't even find a JOB let alone somebody willing to finance a home for me! How did that bank loan manager meeting go down? "Well Mr. Turner, everything looks in order here... Child Rape? Well, I'm sure the kid was asking for it. Say, I don't suppose you've ever been fired for having made a slightly off-color remark in a private conversation to a fellow co-worker, have you? Oh good... 'cuz if you had done anything like THAT we'd have to turn you down! So just the child rape and the prison time, right? EXCELLENT!"

If being a decent person was a prerequisite for owning a home or financial success in general, the world would be full of renters and shopping cart people.

I'm not asking for folks to be decent, I'm just asking that the Child Rapers get it a little more difficult in life than the non-child-rapers. Is that too much to ask?

1) Yeah, you're better off not looking at those registered offender maps, no matter where you live. Just thinking about it will drive you nuts.

2) Yeah, you're better off not thiking about who is employed and a home owner in comparison to yourself. Just thinking about it will drive you nuts.

We have a few in our neighborhood too. It isn't them that worry me. It is the ones that aren't on the list, that haven't been caught or committed their first crime that keep me on alert. We can't protect our children forever and from everything, but we can be careful who they are around and who we leave them with. Most sex offenders aren't pulling kids randomly off the playground after all. They are people who you know and trust.

We have 8 that live in a 2 mile radius of us (oh and 3 elementry schools). A couple of the pedos look like they may have possibily been dating a 16 year old, but there's one that's full fledged scary creepy. Old as hell with a scraggy ass beard.

There's at least 20 registered sex offenders who have a physical residence in or near my town. Two of them, brothers, are friends/relatives/whatever with my next door neighbors. So yeah, it's a little unnerving.

In our last house, we had one literally right next to our tiny cul de sac. One that was known for blowing kisses to children at nearby grocery stores, etc. Seemed like an awfully proud motherfucker. I'd see him out on his bike sometimes and had to practise some serious anger management. Oh yeah, and there's a Montessori school across the street - that my friend's son now goes to. :\ What can ya do.

I'm more worried about all the people that don't show up on that list for one reason or another. The ones that haven't been found out (yet?!), the ones that were only declared level 1 (of which are MANY more, categorized as a lower level for reasons that I don't trust), etc.

It's disturbing to see how commonplace that is.
