Today there was an ad in the "Free" section of our local Craigslist offering 4 boxes of Doctor Who Trading Cards. The catch was that the original owner didn't want them to go to just some Craigslist Free-Sniper who would turn around and sell them on Ebay or something... he wanted them to go to a REAL FAN. So he asked each reply to be accompanied with a story about who your favorite Doctor is and why.

I'm sure you've already given these away, but couldn't pass up the chance to share my thoughts on a "Favorite" Doctor :)

Because really, how to you choose a FAVORITE Doctor?

My first Doctor, like most American folks who grew up here, was Tom Baker. KVOS TV 12 out of Bellingham showed re-runs of his episodes relentlessly through my formative pre-teen and "Tween" years, and I enjoyed the show mainly because there was nothing else on at that time of night (pre-cable, middle of nowhere meant 5 channels to choose from, and 3 of those were Canadian). I have some great fondness and nostalgia for the fourth Doctor, but is he "My" Doctor?

Or is is Sylvester McCoy? It was a rare treat when Channel 12 would show the NEW EPISODES coming out of England, and I instantly identified with his nerdy/clueless portrayal of the doctor. Plus you gotta admit, Doctor #7 had the HOTTEST SIDEKICK IN ALL OF FOREVER, my beloved Ace *siiiigh*. But just because he felt so new and reverent, could he really be "My" Doctor?

Then there's the Doctor who nearly got me laid, Peter Davison. A girl who I really liked but had very little in common with one day revealed to me that she loved Doctor Who. I was floored! We talked for hours and hours about our favorite adventures, and once I discovered that the 5th Doctor was her favorite, my preferences shifted towards Mr. Moffett. Never did go any further than friendship with that girl, but I'll still put a celery stalk on my lapel and hope is doesn't turn purple due to the presence of certain gases in the Praxis range :) I do have a certain bit of loyalty to The Fifth Doctor, but is HE "My" Doctor?

No... *MY* Doctor is David Tennant, and here's why. When i met the woman that would be my wife, she was a complete blank slate; she had no likes or dislikes. She came from a small town where you go to your job at the factory all week so you can go to the bar and drink your paycheck till you die. Just like The Doctor, I swept in and showed her worlds she had never dreamed of before; Star Trek, Red Dwarf, Star Wars, Back To The Future... the basics of "Popular" Science Fiction, with the intention of working her in to the more hard-core stuff like Doctor Who at a later date. It was right about that time that the Sci Fi Channel picked up and started running the new Doctor Who and she's the one who pointed it out to ME as something that she wanted to keep watching. And so we watched every week and it was indeed our favorite show... but once he regenerated in to David Tennant? That's when my wife got OBSESSED with the show! It's something that we share together and makes us happy :)

However, my Three-year-Old Daughter's favorite Doctor is Tom Baker. We've come full circle! See my (short) blog post about it here: http://captain-slinky.livejournal.com/643469.html

If the cards are not already gone and you've liked my story, my daughter and I could come to get them from you pretty much any time tomorrow morning before 10 or after noon. It would be awesome to have these cards because we don't have much in the way of Doctor Who stuff (I have a K-9 record, a few books and 3 issues of the magazine... that's it!) and I could use the cards in a game with my daughter. Thanks!
