Everybody who reeds this should know by now that my daughter, Molly, is a full-on NERD GIRL. Doctor Who, Star Wars, Comic Books, Robots... I've got her trained from birth for this stuff. But everything I've been able to do with her has been due to my work with the other girls in my life; The Nieces.

BRITTANY: My first Geek, my greatest success. Her earliest "Favorite" movies were things like "Gremlins 2", "Fright Night" and "Stephen King's IT". She proved to be absolutely fearless when it came to scary things, and very willing to devote herself to new concepts and ideas as long as a Cute Boy was involved (she will deny this or maybe not remember it, but whenever I would try to get her interested in a new show her first question about it was "Yeah but are there any Cute Boys in it?") Over the years she outgrew the need for Uncle Brian to show her the way, and soon the student became The Master. She introduced me to the entire Whedonverse of characters, an entire genre I had previously dismissed as sappy melodrama in disguise. She has a bit too much of her mothers impatience, though, which drives me nuts; she is able to skip entire episodes of various TV shows to just get to "The Good Ones" if she becomes bored. I am both annoyed and envious of this ability.

HALEY: To be perfectly honest, I didn't have much hope for Haley in the beginning. She was 100% her Mothers Child when she started, being obsessed with hair and clothes and shopping and I figured her to be a lost cause. But then one day I received a request; Haley needed more Archie Comics at Grandma's House because she had read all the ones that were there! I proceeded cautiously; knowing that if I pushed too hard I might frighten her away. She was timid. Knowing that her family had an affinity for Looney Tunes cartoons, I let her watch Jim Carey in "The Mask". We eased her in to the idea of Nerdiness with cross-over shows like "Gilmore Girls". She showed GREAT aptitude for sedimentary Geekiness, being able to ingest entire SEASONS of TV shows in a single season! I moved her on to shows like Buffy, Angel, Doctor Who... she DEVOURED THEM! Discovered that she was in to drawing so i started bringing her to Comic Con and Free Comic Book Day. Her big goal in life is to become a Disney Imagineer. Her favorite magazine is "Wired"! It was like training a feral cat, but in the end she has ended up being a super-geek all on her own.

HANNAH: Hannah is an experimental process for me. She's a Geek through and through, more like I was at her age than any of my previous students, yet so unlike me that I sometimes have no idea how to approach teaching her. She's timid; very, VERY timid. She can't watch most episodes of Doctor Who because they are "Too Freaky", but anything with a skeleton or more action than an episode of "Drake & Josh" is "Too Freaky" for her. She has ZERO patience for continuity and would rather watch/read an adventure out of order than wait for the whole story, but once she has SEEN the whole story she pieces it together in her head. DRIVES ME NUTS! She is drawn to the gaming aspect of Geekiness, but lacks the confidence to Role Play. She loves the books, the dice, the decks of cards... and when we play D&D, every once in awhile she drops her Hannahness and really *becomes* her character. i think she's kind of shy and/or scarred when that happens, though... that's where I'll be focusing my energies this year for her. Breaking down that wall between Fantasy and Reality.

KAIT: My newest recruit, I haven't spent much time with her yet even though I've known her all her life. She is the offspring of *MY* Alpha Geek, so the genetics are there. From what I know of her, she's got a good solid start but is looking for more focus and direction. She's a fan of Doctor Who, Roller Derby, On-Line Games and Web Comics. A good, solid base on which to build from.

The "training a feral cat" line made me LOL. Awesome!!

This is great. I'm like Hannah, I think. I'm very interested in D&D, but I get kinda scared to really get into the characters. But even worse, I get scared of not "getting" the rules, and I don't want to embarrass myself by doing it wrong, so I end up not doing it at all. It's terrible! I need to find someone to show me the ropes, because I hate reading rules - I'm so much better if someone just tells me how to do it out loud and I get to practice it as they tell me. I gotta learn though, because I really want to become a DM, but I can't do that until I've played the game, for chrissakes!
