We're watching the Rankin-Bass animated version of The Return of The King right now, and even though I've seen it several times this is the first time I've realized just how sad it is.
The movie opens with a Birthday party for Bilbo; all his friends are there. He starts grumbling about his missing ring, and how he wishes he knew whatever happened to it... and then everybody proceeds to fill him in about what happened to the ring, and that's what the entire movie is about.
To be specific about what bothers me here is that they have to remind Bilbo about how there was A GIANT WAR AGAINST THE EVILEST EVIL IN ALL OF EVILNESS... a war against A GIANT FLAMING EYE IN THE SKY. A war where THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE DIED.
Bilbo doesn't remember any of that stuff. It's like Grampa somehow forgetting about World War II! Is it Alzheimer's?
It's really added a whole new layer of sadness to this movie that was missing from the epic Peter Jackson version...
