Just read two reviews of our hotel that were almost identical, yet completely different - one gave it five stars, the other gave it on-half star. Paraphrasing here, sentence by sentence...

THE GOOD: "When we discovered that the sink in our room did not work, the kind and courteous staff immediately offered us another room"

THE BAD: "When we went to the front desk to complain that our sink wasn't working, the front desk clerk had the AUDACITY to suggest that we move our things to another room!"

THE GOOD: "The Continental Breakfast was a nice variety of baked goods, coffee, juice, dry cereal and milk that was just the perfect, light kick-start for a great day at Disneyland"

THE BAD: "The so-called 'Continental Breakfast' was a JOKE. What's so 'Continental' about some donuts and dry cereal?"

THE GOOD: "We were very impressed that we could see the Fireworks from the parking lot almost better than we had seen them while *in* Disneyland!"

THE BAD: "Don't plan on getting any sleep - The constant BOOM from the fireworks nearly shook us right out of the bed!"

THE GOOD: "They weren't kidding about being close to the park, either! Maybe a block-and-a-half from the main gate?"

THE BAD: "Somebody should sue this location for false advertising - don't plan on walking to Disneyland unless you're a star athlete with really good hiking boots!"

Possible explanation: Good Reviewer doesn't have children. Bad Reviewer has a horde of children and is suffering from sever sleep deprivations.

Other comments that were not parallel indicated that the negative reviewer was there with one grandchild, positive reviewer was there with 3 kids. So therein lies the big difference... still, it was pretty funny!

having worked for a hotel for 5 + years there is a lot of disparity between peoples' expectations and what actually happens. do people really think that mechanical issues never ever pop up? somebody has to fix the issue and some people either want to move rooms or don't.

the one year we had a huge flood and streets were closed down but by golly first floor guests STILL had the gall to complain carpets were wet on the first floor because the RAIN just would not stop. nevermind the hotel was a refuge for the people who had to take BOATS to stay in a "dry" place. people have the gall to expect mother nature to cooperate? i would have been happy to have offered to turn out those who were not satisfied but doing so would have offended someone's expectations that a hotel should actually want people who are never happy with ANYTHING to stay. you take the "good" with the "bad" for sure with hotel guests.

Expectations and attitude really can make or break an experience.
