Turns out it's not really LJ!Fail, but rather a large-scale DDOS attack that's been ongoing for some time. :( People sure do suck sometimes.
I like the community aspect of LJ. Google+ has some nice ways of handling some aspects and in a couple of ways it almost feels LJ-like. It's probably the closest and most reliable you're going to get without jumping to an LJ clone. You should be able to use Google+ now just by nature of having a Gmail account. Worth a try, at least.
If you come on over to G+ I'm Emily Abbott and have a picture of a fairy hugging a cup of coffee as an icon. I hate it, I don't use it, but...that's just me.
I'm also the person that uses FB for an arcade so YMMV.
