This is also known as "My Story About Why I Love Neil Gaiman". It was the Summer of 1992, the year I owned my very own comic book store called "The Escape From Reality". There were two different major Comic Book Distributors back then, Diamond Comics and Capital City. We chose to go with Capital City because they had a semi-local distribution center and better shipping rates, and we never regretted buying our comics through them. And I think they loved us, too - they invited us to a "Retailer Incentive Dinner" in Seattle! It was pretty awesome... only 25 comic shop owners from around the State of Washington were invited, guest of honor was the new favorite writer that everyone was talking about, Neil Gaiman; DC Comics was sending him out to these things to announce the launch of their new "Vertigo" imprint. It was a good meal, it was a wonderful evening of chatting, it was the most impressive night of my life up to that point :)

So the reason I love Neil Gaiman is because every time I see him and his success, I'm reminded of the greatest time of my life. A time where I felt really important, really cutting-edge, really involved... every time I hear about his success, I just remember that dinner with the weird British guy and I smile :)

I remember Neil Gaiman when he was the GoH at Norwescon. He was one of the nicest authors they've ever had, before or since. Even when he was being told he HAD to get moving to catch his flight; he made sure to take time to sign autographs for everyone waiting.

His work has never failed to entertain me, ro make me think.
