I'm in a terrible, down-spiral mood right now so I'm trying to avoid saying or doing anything I'll regret. However, over on Facebook I posted:
I'm tired of all this "Respect" stuff going around - "I respect your opinion", etc - so y'know what? I'm gonna go ahead and say it - if I disagree with you, I don't RESPECT you or your opinion. The best you're gonna get out of me from now on is acknowledgement of your right to have your stupid opinion. I'm done with "respecting" racists, bigots, sexists and assorted "Haters".

Once it was posted I thought "Whoa... that's the EXACT type of stuff I should avoid saying or doing when I'm in a foul mood" and so I moved it on over to Livejournal.

Heh. There's a whole class of "opinions" that I can't respect, and you just named a good portion of them. They have the right to state their opinions. They don't have a right to be free from the consequences of stating their opinions. If they say something stupid or racist or bigoted or otherwise awful, they're not respecting the people they're talking about, so how can they expect others to respect them?

Now, occasionally, there are people who repeat things they hear and/or are rather oblivious or live under a rock. They often feel bad and correct themselves when someone calls it out, though, kind of like when someone points out their zipper is down. I can still have respect for those people, but only if they fix it.

I noticed that the Facebook crowd tended to have more of that type of thing going around, unfortunately. Don't see it much on LJ.
