Impressive things Molly did today
Jan. 28th, 2014 12:08 amThere were two things Molly did today that impressed me and made me proud and/or confident that we did something right.
1) Watching her favorite Musical, "Holy Musical B@man", for about the 500th time, a funny musical that has a bit of foul language in it including a running catch-phrase of "FUCK YOOOOU!!!", she asked me "Daddy, what *is* Fuck, anyways?" I told her it's a word with lots and lots and LOTS of meanings, but here they mean it like "Curse You" or "Screw you", just another word to use when you're angry at somebody - BUT it's not an all-the-time word, like you wouldn't want to use it at school or in public or -
"Like how Mommy uses it?" She had a valid point...
I told her that this was kind of the problem of words like that, where if you start using it, you kind of forget that you're using it and then it just slips out all the time when you don't even notice it. That's why I don't use it rarely ever at all unless it's something I'm VERY serious about.
"I thought that's what it was like. I don't think I want to use it". And then we went back to enjoying the musical.
2) Molly occasionally has insomnia that can be cured by taking a dose of Melatonin, an over-the-counter, non-prescription hormone that can naturally help you fall asleep. She DOES NOT like to take the pill, but agrees to take it when/if insomnia strikes on a school night. Since there is no school tomorrow, Molly was very knowing and methodical about how to let me know that she wanted to come back out to the living room tonight, using all her knowledge from past experiences to show that she's in control.
FIRST, she let me read to her for a solid hour.
Then she suggested that we just turn out the lights and see if that works - when she was offered a Melatonin to help sleep, she went through her list of reasons why not - tomorrow isn't a school day, she doesn't like the Melatonin, she'd rather fall asleep on her own, she pinky-promises to take Melatoning tomorrow night if this doesn't work, but of course first let's try just laying here in the dark.
After 20 minutes in the dark, Molly whispered in my ear "Daddy, are you awake? I still can't sleep and I don't want to keep Mommy awake... can we go out to the living room?"
She knows the routine. She knows she'd rather do things naturally. She knows there are procedures and protocols that must be followed. I'm really impressed by that :)
