Having seen the absolute OUTRAGE over Jesse Eisenberg being cast as Lex Luthor in the next Superman movie, I feel it's time to revisit my own observed history of Fan Rage over "Poor Casting" as witnessed through the 1980's/1990's Batman Movie Franchise.

1988: "Michael Keaton as BATMAN?!?!? The guy from 'Mr. Mom' and 'Gung Ho'??? That's TERRIBLE! AWFUL! He's a COMEDIAN, not a HERO! We need somebody strong and handsome in that roll, like That guy from Top Gun that was in Willow... Val whatsisname!"

1991: "Christopher Walken? AWESOME! NOW we're talkin'! And Danny DeVitto as The Penguin? GENIUS! This is gonna be AWESOME!

1994: "HOT DAMN VAL KILMER AS BATMAN!!! And finally ROBIN! And a supporting cast of Jim Carey and Tommy Lee Jones? THIS is the Bat-Movie we've been waiting for!"

1996: "SEXIEST MAN ALIVE GEORGE CLOONEY AS BATMAN?!?!? ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER?!?!? HOLY CRAP!!! THIS WILL BE THE BATMN FILM THAT EVERYONE REMEMBERS!!!"

Heh. I've given up on paying much attention to the casting these days.

Keaton as Batman did surprise me pleasantly. Kilmer and Clooney struck me as a disaster when I first heard of it; as did Schwarzenegger. The problem with that series of movie sequels was that there were too many characters randomly thrown together by writers that didn't understand them. Walken was actually pretty good. So was Pfeiffer.

Eisenberg as Luthor can't be any worse than any of the other choices Warner has made. I'll give it a chance. I may, MAY be pleasantly surprised once again. I'm just not going to hold my breath.
