I don't like how reliant I've been on pain medication for my torn abdominal muscle, where my routine is usually one pill before going to sleep and another when I wake up (supposed to take two every 4 hours), and so I've been experimenting. Found that I WILL NOT get a good night's sleep without medication yet, but I can make it through the morning with as little as two Tylenol with my coffee.

This morning, however, I'm even skipping the Tylenol and going straight to my cup of black coffee... and DISNEYLAND.

Seems to be working so far!

I totally get it. I had family members who were hooked on that sort of thing, so I have pretty strong concerns and use them sparingly. My doctors have repeatedly mentioned that using pain medication while actually in real pain won't get you hooked. They've stressed that the stress that extreme pain puts the body under is generally much worse than the side effects of the meds. But it DOES cause you to have a lower tolerance for pain with repeated use, so if you can manage okay with Tylenol and distractions some of the time, that's good. But the loss of sleep or loss of the ability to relax really isn't worth it since you need it to heal.
