News has just reached Comics Buyer's Guide that veteran comic-book artist Dan DeCarlo, creator of JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS and long-time artist for a number of Archie titles, died the morning of Dec. 19 of a heart attack in the hospital to which he had been admitted for other health concerns.
Born Dec. 12, 1919, DeCarlo attended the Art Students League for three years. He served four and a half years in the Armed Forces in World War II and was in England, France, Belgium, and Germany as an artist with the 8th Airforce, designing cartoon mascots for fighter planes, among other duties.
He married his wife, Josie, in Belgium in 1945 and was discharged in 1946. Upon his return to the United States, he sought work as a cartoonist, working for such companies as Timely, DC, Ziff-Davis, and Archie. He finally went full-time with Archie Comics in 1957. He was awarded an Inkpot in 1991. In recent years, he has spent considerable time and expense in litigation, attempting to regain rights to his work on JOSIE, SABRINA, and others.
